Can I switch my IUD out early? (ie - before January

Yes, however, it requires jumping through some hoops.

The first thing I would recommend that you do is check with your insurance company to see if they will cover a new IUD device. IUDs are pretty pricey (ranging between $1200 and $1500 per device, so you want to make sure it's covered first)

Check to see if IUD replacement is covered by your insurance:

  • Call your insurance provider first

    • You can call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask if your IUD is covered. You can also ask if there are any out-of-pocket costs or if the IUD is only partially covered.

  • Provide the J code

    • J code for Mirena is J7298

    • J code for Kyleena is J7296

    • J code for Liletta is J7297

    • J code for skyla is J7301

    • J code for Paragard is J7300

  • Provide the CPT code

    • The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code for Mirena placement is 58300

  • Provide the Diagnosis code

  • Z30.014: Initial prescription of an IUD, including counseling and advice

  • Z30.430: Insertion of an IUD

  • Z30.432: Removal of an IUD

  • Z30.433: Removal and reinsertion of an IUD in the same session

Once you have done this, you can speak with your OBGYN about replacing your IUD device and share that your insurance will cover it. (read: even if it is before you are due to have the device changed)

  • The Mirena and Liletta are approved for 8 years of use (with the best menses management in the first 5 years), the Kyleena is approved for 5 years and the Skyla IUD is a 3 year device. The non hormonal Paragard is a 10 year device.

Listen up! If you like your IUD and you’re nearing the end of its span- GET A NEW ONE NOW.

    • If insurance covers it, there's not really a reason why you wouldn’t restart the clock on the device - skip the Skyla - go for the Kyleena, Liletta or Mirena and it will be good until Trump is out of office (assuming that he actually leaves after the 4 years).
