bringing my daughter

Most of this webpage is built for women accessing their own healthcare. But it is not lost on me that there is an entire generation of young women coming into age in this political landscape.

In today’s political climate, especially with the shifting laws around reproductive rights, there are some additional questions you may want to ask during your daughter’s OBGYN appointments to ensure her health and rights are protected. Here are a few considerations:

  • How do recent changes in reproductive rights affect my daughter’s care?

Ask about how state or national laws may impact access to care, especially in light of any abortion bans or restrictions on reproductive services.

  • What should we know about privacy and confidentiality regarding her health records?

With concerns about digital surveillance and data sharing, it’s important to understand how her health information is protected, especially if there are laws that might try to access it.

  • What are her options for reproductive health care if laws in our state change?

Ask about alternatives or referrals in case her options are restricted in the future, including access to abortion, birth control, and other reproductive health services.

  • What should we do if she needs emergency contraception or birth control but we’re in a state where it’s hard to access?

With some states making it difficult to access certain medications or services, it’s helpful to know what options are available if access becomes limited.

  • What resources can you recommend for educating her about her reproductive rights?

Given how quickly laws are changing, it’s helpful to stay informed about her rights and how she can advocate for herself.

  • How does the current political landscape affect preventative care like Pap smears and STI testing?

Ensure you understand the guidelines around preventive care and how access to those services may vary depending on where you live.

  • How can we ensure she is prepared to make informed decisions about her reproductive health, even in a potentially restrictive environment?

Ask how you can empower her with the knowledge and tools to make decisions and seek care, no matter the political climate.

  • Would it make sense for her to consider a long acting reversible contraceptive at this time?

A LARC such as an IUD or nexplanon could help empower your daughter and give her more flexibility during this ever changing and overwhelming time. Might be worth considering!

Given the uncertainty around reproductive rights, these questions help ensure your daughter is not only informed but also prepared to navigate her health in an ever-changing landscape. It’s important that we work to empower her and that she has access to all the necessary resources to make her own informed decisions.
